Who’s in charge of SAP licensing in your organization? Is it you? A dedicated Licensing Manager (aka Software Asset Manager, aka SAM)? Maybe it’s the IT manager or the CIO? Someone is doing this job, because each year, many vendors including SAP, conduct software licensing audits and someone is providing the reports. It's not an easy task, things fall through the cracks, and even the most minor mistake or oversight can be embarrassing, or ahem… illegal. Believe it or not, SAP wants you to be its customer. Moreover, SAP wants you to be a satisfied customer so that your company will purchase other SAP management solutions in the future. If you have always assumed that negotiating SAP contracts is impossible (as impossible as negotiating contracts with a bank, utility provider, cell phone operator), then assume again.
When you go to a tailor to purchase a suit, do you prefer a suit that fits you 100%, in size and taste? Or would you rather get a semi-fitted suit, which is not quite your size (baggy…) and only close to the color you wanted? I’m pretty sure the unanimous answer is a 100% tailored suit – nothing less. In off-the-shelf software however, I recommend the opposite: tailor the software as little as possible.
